ROYAL PRUSSIAN JAGDSTAFFEL 2 (Boelcke) Created 10 August 1916, from FEA7 in accordance with Chef des Feldflieger West von Nr 22429 Fl. Stationed in the 1 Armee sector, it was commanded by hauptmann Oswald Boelcke who had been credited with 19 victories at this time. the first aircraft were recieved on 1 September, two Fokker DIIIs from Armee Flugpark 1 (AEP1), and an Albatros DII from Jasta 1. Boelcke scored the units first victory, his 20th, on 2 September, and on the 14th became the first pilot to score five victories with a Jasta. Hauptmann Boelcke was killed in an accident , two days after his 40th victory, on 28 October. The aircraft of Lt Erwin Bohme, of Jasta 2, collided in mid-air with Boelcke's, causing him to fall to his death. Bohme survived the collision. Oberleutnant Karl Bodenschatz, the Offizier zur besonderen Verwendung (OzbV) for Jasta 2 assumed temporary command until Oberleutnant Stefan Kirmaier (three victories) took over on 30 October. Kirmaier was killed during combat on 22 November, after having scored his 11th victory two days prior, and Hauptmann Franz Walz (six victories) arrived from Jasta 19 on November 29 to take command. Jasta 2 was renamed Jasta Boelcke, in honor of its first leader, on 17 December. The Jasta's 100th victory was claimed during February 1917, probably on the 25th by Lt Werner Voss for his 8th claim. On the 27th the Jasta commenced operations on both the 1 Armee and the 2 Armee Fronts. Then on 9 June 1917, Hauptmann Waltz was transferred to the command of Jasta 34, and Lt Otto Bernert (seven victories) of Jasta 6, was assigned as the new commander. The Jasta moved to the 2 Armee on 1 August andon to the Flanders Area with the 4 Armee on 7 August. Bernert departed 18 August, with Lt Erwin Bohme (13 victories) from Jasta 29, succeeding him as commanding officer. After Bohme was killed during combat on 29 November, immediately after downing his 24th enemy aircraft, Lt Freiherr Eberhard von Gudenberg, OzbV, assumed command, until the arrival of Lt Walter von Bulow-Bothkamp (28 victories) from Jasta 36 on 13 December. Von Bulow's term as commander was short as he fell in combat on 6 January 1918. Lt Max von Muller (36 victories) was assignedas temporary commander until he was killed in combat 9 January 1918. Another temporary commander, Lt Theodor Cammann (one victory), led the unit untill Lt Otto Hohne (6 victories), of Jasta 59, arrived on 26 January. The Jasta's 200th victory was scoredduring Febuary 1918, probably on the 26th by Lt Richard Plange for his third claim. Jasta Boelcke became part of Jagdgeschwader 3, with Jasta 26, 27 and 36, on 16 February at the airfield at Marcke. JG3 was commanded by Hauptmann Bruno Loerzer, who had 22 kills at this time. Hohne, who had not added to his score, was transferred on 20 February, and Lt karl Bolle (five victories) arrived from Jasta 28w to assume command, which he held untill the end of the war. A move was made on 21 May to the 7 Armee Sector, then JG3 was assigned to the 17 Armee, and on 27 September, the unit scored its 300th victory.
